As your photographer, I strive to take photos that reflect the reality that is uniquely yours. Your family photos are precious not because of perfectly coordinated outfits or perfectly 'well behaved' children. They're precious because they serve as tangible reminders of what life is like right now.

Let go of expectations

I do it, too. I come to my own family's photo sessions with an idea in my head of what I want them to be, or what they 'should' be. But when children are involved, even the most well thought out plans can change in an instant. That is ok. Take a deep breath and let the session be what it will be. I promise we will capture really beautiful, timeless images together.

My story 💖

When I was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis in 1999 at age 7, it wasn’t expected that my life would ever look like this. The median life expectancy for someone like me at that time was ~24 years old.

I grew up thinking I’d die young, so I never really pictured myself having kids.

As is normal for people living with CF, I gradually got sicker as I got older. By age 27, I was not doing very well, but I was in denial about that at the time.

Then, in 2019, #Trikafta became available to me. Within a couple days of taking the medication, I felt as though I didn’t have CF at all. It was seriously the wildest experience of my life.

That is, until I found out I was pregnant.

With twins!

Now, five+ years later, I’m a healthy 33 year old, raising a family with my best friend & the most amazing baby daddy I could have ever imagined.

Life comes at you fast. Take the pictures. (And hire me to do it 😉)

I swear my soul sighed with joy as I was taking these photos and again while editing them. 😌

Documenting families in this way — slow, unprompted — slows my heart so that its rhythm matches the pace of the evening.

Farai and her family are in the middle of a home renovation. She was skeptical that we’d be able to get any good photos, given that they’re in the middle of painting, replacing windows, etc.

Valid concern. 😂

BUT. I was quietly thrilled.

It might not feel like it when you’re in the middle of a huge transition, but I think transitional stages of life can make the most meaningful photos.

We don’t typically photograph the mess. But within the mess is the toddler helping daddy paint. Bare feet on unfinished wood floors. Mom making dinner (and smoothies that baby boy couldn’t keep his hands out of - literally.)

Amid the mess is life. And that deserves to be documented.

It’s seriously been so exciting reading what you guys write about this current phase of your life, what you love about each other, what your favorite things to do together are, etc. I get giddy when I get the notification that the questionnaire has been filled out. 🤗

I’ve never done session prep like this in the 9+ years I’ve been photographing families (🫣) and I’m already loving the effect. I feel closer to you & more comfortable with you/your family before we’ve even had a chance to meet. I feel like this will have such a significant impact on the art we create together, and I can’t wait to see the results. 💖

As moms, we’re not often in the photos. We’re the ones taking them.

No one is taking pictures of us feeding the baby while we feed the toddler. We don’t even think about that being photo-worthy.

But as a mom myself, I cherish the photos that I am in with my kids, especially the “mundane” ones. They give me a fresh (and sometimes very needed) perspective on myself.

Sometimes I study the pictures that I’m in, trying to glean information about what my role looks like from the outside. We can’t see ourselves as we mother our child(ren), so having that mirrored back at us through photos is really special.

What we do as moms is a labor of love. It’s not selfish or indulgent to want that documented. 📷

These things don’t exactly seem photo-worthy. After all, they’re just things. They’re not aesthetically pleasing. They aren’t where they’re supposed to be. We wish we could put away Alder’s toys (he won’t let us because the kitchen island is their ‘home’). That is, until the kids are at school, then they become sweet mementos. Reminders that twin 4-year-olds live here.
